"Molecular techniques in environmental monitoring"
Anthropogenic effects, such as climate changes and emerging new legislation increase the demand for sensitive and precise assessments of the biodiversity. However, the challenge in species identification for some taxonomic groups at different life stages combined with the decline of taxonomic experts implies the need for alternative approaches to morphology-based species identification. Molecular techniques for monitoring biodiversity present such alternatives.
The thesis describes new insights into applications of molecular techniques for monitoring biodiversity ranging from fingerprinting techniques for identifying three brown frog species to qPCR analysis of eDNA concentrations to determine the population size of great crested newts and next generation sequencing of mixed stream invertebrate samples to analyze stream water qualities. The developed approaches have the potential to supplement established conventional methods. Potentially future management decisions could benefit from implementing high sample throughput and additionally overcome the decline of taxonomic experts.
