Press-cake
The fiber-rich press cake can be a raw material for production of valuable food and feed additives, where some will have prebiotics effects on the gut microflora and can reduce the use of antibiotics in agriculture. The cake can further be pre-treated and enzymatically hydrolyzed and utilized in a sugar platform for biological production (fermentation) of chemicals, fuels and materials (including feed and food). Furthermore, the press-cake can be used as a substrate for solid-state fermentation of filamentous fungi for protein and enzyme production. The press-cake can also be ensiled without additives, and used as feed for dairy cows, and has surprisingly shown a 5-10% increase in milk production compared with a traditional silage in experiments carried out by our collaborators.
