Protein extraction

The world’s demand for proteins for feed and food is rapidly increasing. We focus on extracting leaf proteins from freshly harvested crops, especially from alfalfa, clover, and grasses. We have developed novel processes by which screw pressed juice from the freshly harvested crop are used for either lactic acid fermentation to decrease the pH and precipitate proteins or for membrane-filtration purification to obtain food and feed proteins. These refined proteins have a favourable amino acid content and are comparable with soy proteins. The proteins are applied by our collaborators in experimental feed formulations for egg-laying hens, broilers and pigs and show promising results. We are also working on refining the proteins into food-ingredients together with collaborators.
